It was so nice to see several new faces attending our 4th Cyclocross event on Saturday 5th August at SmithPark Cyclodrome. Will Bird fresh from the mud of Poland, ensured all races went without an issue, His very loud air horn starting each race in our now standard format of the one lap dash, first for the Cyclocross riders, followed by the Mountain bikers. Linc Carolan will have to get down to Smith Park if he wants the track record back! Mal Lindsay now holds the record by 1 second, doing his first ever lap in 6.23mins. (See our Web results page for all 1 lap dash times). Luke Azzarpardi, Shawn Garraway, Bradon Hutton & Grahame Allen all finished in under 7 mins. Great effort guys!
The style of bike holding varied considerable & with the exception of Brandon, nearly demolishing a hurdle, all cleared them with ease.
The afternoon highlight was the Pony Express & again this provided real rivalry & some exciting racing. Grahame Allen powered off with Luke Azzarpardi hot on his heals, jumping hurdles side by side & giving the spectators some great entertainment. Graceful & some not so graceful leaps & the occasional spill brought cheers & cries from the crowd! Grahame was teamed with Harry Sandilant, who showed many how it should be done – maybe his brand new bike spurred him on! Luke handed over to Fiona Yard but at the end of the first two laps Harry was still ahead & Grahame had the pleasure of adorning “the fluro Wig”, which he was not impressed about! Fiona’s brilliant form on the track powered her to the finish for a well deserved win for herself & Luke. Grahame & Harry came a close second with the “Green team” of Gavin & Justin not far behind.
Julie Scarf & Sandy Perkins, both newcomers, where all smiles & a comment “Best fun I’ve had on a bike in ages!” was made! So Ladies, if we have more participants we’ll have a Ladies race next time.
Thanks again to Jonesy for his wonderful vocal entertainment while calling the races & coming to us despite his favourite four legged Racers being on!
See you all next time – Friday 1st September is our next CX race so lock it in the calendar.
